Younger Stannis is incredibly depressing, because there MUST have been a time when he dreamt of other stuff than "well I'm going to suck it up and do what Robert tells me to even though Robert is a drunk idiot". And book!Stannis thinks even dreaming of anything but that is frivolous already.
