At least Stannis' ascetic lifestyle makes it rather likely that he'll grow old. I can definitely see Stannis living to 60, 70, whatever. But even then, his death would devastate both Sansa and Jon. At least Kingsguard!Jon would have his duty to keep him going, and he might even find some new purpose in being an advisor to Stannis' son and heir (and suffer horribly inside every time Steffon reminds him too much of Stannis, which would be often). But Sansa, with all her children grown up and her feeling like they don't need her anymore ... she'd be completely heartbroken. But still ... I think the general happiness of this verse for 20, 30 or more years is worth the heartbreak that would come with Stannis' death. Better than Stannis staying alone just so nobody will be sad when he dies.
Now this kind of reminds me of a less extreme version of Aragorn/Arwen.
