Light at the end of the tunnel

Sudden flash of creativity last night. An idea presented itself, and it looks like KS is going to take a turn I really didn't expect. Looks like it might almost get something like a plot (yes, in chapter 12 ... which is not surprising, since I'm not all that interested in plots). I managed to write an additional 500 words just now, but since I haven't decided yet in what order the scenes I've written and the ones I'm thinking about are going to happen, half of what I've written so far might just end up in a later chapter. The new turn of events will force me to have Drizzt find out much earlier just how close Artemis and Zak really are, and I have been looking forward to writing that scene ever since I started the story. However, first I will have to write a scene with Artemis, Zak, Drizzt and CB, which is going to be a pain because 1) I'm no good at scenes with many people (i.e. more than two), 2) I hate to write Drizzt, 3) I have no idea how to write CB without shameless character bashing. She deserves it, but I don't want to overdo it either. Still, things are moving forward again. ^^

Personally, and from what I've seen of your comments pages I am not alone, I think you are very good at writing Drizzt. Or at least, Drizzt in way that makes him more realistic and actually - likable. I was reading another fic and left a comment something like, "I didn't really LIKE her as a character, but that is what made me like her MORE". Which probably confused the author, but but makes sense to me XD The fact that the character had layers made them more intriguing, even if you weren't always cheering for them. Probably why so many people actually like characters like Jarlaxle, Zak and Artemis more than RAS' Drizzt. They are given conflict and layers, Drizzt just gets angst.

So, your CB will probably be quite awesome <3

I'm glad you have so much confidence in me. ;) I know what you mean about complex characters being more likeable, even if we don't really LIKE them. I just don't think that my Drizzt is very complex. He's whiny, naive, annoying, and self-centred, because that is how I see Drizzt. My Drizzt is not even really angsty because I'm not interested enough in him to give him proper angst. But maybe that's why you think I'm good at writing him - because I insist so much on his flaws, unlike RAS who writes about the same annoying brat and prenteds he's cool. At least that's the only explanation I can think of. And CB ... you'd have to reinvent her character to make her at least halfway bearable. I think I'll push her out of the story as soon as I can. I'm sure Artemis and Zak can't wait to get rid of her (once Zak has met her, obviously). Anyway, you just cheered me up a lot. :D

Glad to hear so.

I also strongly believe that angst is not character development. Whereas you are giving him a personality and therefore a chance to develop as a character. Even if you don't like him! Personally I think you'd write a rather amazing Drizzt fic if you ever wanted to torture yourself! You could help him get a life! XD Or perhaps Kimmuriel could just screw around with his head? :D

I like what you said below about Zak becoming upset with Drizzt slagging off his Artemis *squee* Will be fun as we only really got to see "Argh, this is uncomfortable"!Zak last chapter XD

Somehow I doubt that I will make Drizzt develop as a character, simply because I dislike him so much that I doubt that he's capable of getting over his narrow-mindedness. Although I like the idea of Drizzt getting a life ... after Kimmuriel brain-washed him. I SERIOUSLY like the idea. Thank you. ^^ I have no idea if it will fit anywhere into the story, but I will keep it in mind. ;)

True. ^^ I like Zak being protective about his Artemis (and the other way around). Drizzt is in for quite a few surprises.

OMG THIS IS SOUNDING AWESOME. And I agree with your other commenter in that I really enjoy how you write Drizzt. He acts more like his age, for one thing, rather than the grand sage of the ages. And Zak really needs to slag him for that at least once:D And OMG writing the scene with CB will be great--not because I like her, but because the more people that find out about Zak/Artemis, the more hilarious it will be. At least to me:) And while she might not have much character of her own, she's a very good 'soundingboard' character, because Drizzt always expresses his opinions to her in full.

...suddenly I feel very sorry for her. ;P

Thank you. ^^ And Zak will definitely slag the Drizzit at some point. ;) You're right, CB comes in very handy when you want to write about Drizzt's thoughts. In the scene I'm working on now they won't find out about Zak/Artemis yet, but they will soon enough ... Bwahaha. You're right, the more people know the more hilarious it will be. I have every intention of writing a short Zak&Ryld reunion much later in the story (since I always think of Ryld as Zak's student, for some reason ;)). And I'm sure Ryld will be very surprised if Zak rejects him because he's being exclusive with someone, and a human on top of that. Hehe.
Still, writing CB is annoying, even if the whole bitching is a lot of fun. I only feel sorry for Artemis.

Yay! The Drizzit needs it:P

Who is Ryld? One of the characters from the War of the Spiderqueen series?

[identity profile] linndechir.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, he's a Master at Melee-Magthere and one of the main characters in War of the Spider Queen. He's a commoner and surprisingly nice for a drow, but not really "good" either. Like Zak, he's more the kind of person who does what they have to do without liking it. Not to mention that he is a great fighter. For some reason I always imagined that Zaknafein might have been one of Ryld's teachers at the Academy. Canon never even hints to that, but Ryld and Zak have a lot of things in common, they'd get along perfectly. I can easily see them having a rather close mentor-student-relationship.

And don't worry, Zak will be very annoyed by Drizzt very soon. He doesn't like it when people are bitchy to HIS Artemis. ^^
