Shows to watch, pictures to drool at

Erm, update? All right, update. Expect some boring rambling. I’m on holidays, I’m being indescribably lazy and not doing anything useful. Fortunately this means that I had lots of time to watch shows and movies and stuff. The following might include spoilers.

True Blood has been back for a while now. I’m really happy with season three so far, it’s a lot better than the boring main storyline of season two. I love most of the new vampire characters - Russell makes me happy (THAT‘s proper vampire royalty, not that pathetic Sophie-Anne), Franklin is amazing and hilarious in his madness (James Frain <3), Talbot is cute. Alcide is a lot less annoying than I would have expected from a werewolf, I actually like him. I’m happy to see a bit more of Bill’s dark side, it makes his character so much more interesting. I'm generally glad they're focusing less on Bill and Sookie now, as much as I like them. Eric is getting gayer with ever episode (Eric/Sookie? Really? Eric and any woman just makes me laugh because it’s so ridiculously OOC.). I’m only hoping for more Godric flashbacks. :/

Oh, and on a spontaneous whim I started watching Lie To Me. I really like the show, mainly because Tim Roth is really amazing. GUNF. I love how complex his character is, how he has a rather dark past and his morally questionable moments … but he’s still a lot more human than, let’s say, House. I love the combination of this rough side and the fact that he’s actually a big fluffy thing inside. ;) I’m a bit sad Loker gets so little screen time and character development, because he’s easily the most interesting character after Lightman. Yeah, and obviously I ship Lightman/Loker. They ship themselves in the few scenes they get together. I want more of that! Where’s the fandom? Really? Lightman/Foster? That’s incestuous, in not in the good way. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a platonic brother-sister-relationship on TV. Every time they hug or kiss each other on the cheek I think, “dawwwwww, they’re so cute together … but how can anyone ship them?” I really like Foster, and she must be cool for me to like a female character. But I just don’t see the ship. They have strictly no sexual tension. I could see both Loker/Foster and Lightman/Torres rather than Lightman/Foster. I’m just weirded out. Why does this show have no slash fandom? :( I might just have to write something. I love Loker. Not just because he’s gorgeous (yes, I noticed that despite the epic hotness that is Tim Roth), but because I just adore his honesty. He's a wonderful, sadly underdeveloped character.

Btw, I read that Loker’s actor, Brendan Hines, also sings. I actually rather like his music. He doesn’t have an amazing voice, but his music is somehow very cool and relaxing. It’s not the greatest music ever, but it’s very nice to listen to when you’re stressed out and want to lean back and feel good.

And then, of course, there’s BBC Sherlock. Thanks again to cat_irix  for the rec. I really loved what they did with it, which is maybe not surprising considering that I‘m not a classic Holmes fan. The first episode was among the best stuff I’ve seen in a long time. Cumberbatch’s Sherlock is … erm, perfect? And somehow I feel that this character works almost better in a present-day setting. I also love that he’s so young; I find a young Sherlock much more fascinating than the usual middle-aged Holmes we got in most movies. The second episode was a bit disappointing, mainly because of the completely pointless, plot-irrelevant love interest. That was a pathetic, helpless cry of “Look, they’re not really gay!” if I’ve ever seen one, especially after the bantering in the first episode. I had almost hoped that, in this modern setting, they’d finally go out and make the slash that has always been implicit with Holmes/Watson finally canon, but no, they chickened out again. This made me so annoyed I couldn’t even enjoy the second episode properly. I’m curious about the third one now, and either way I do hope it will be continued. If only because I’m utterly in love with Sherlock-on-crack. ;)

Still no fanfic coming from me anytime soon. However, there will be a second fic exchange on blackwoodcoward , so I will definitely force myself to write something for that. Maybe that will put an end to my … it’s not even a writer’s block, it’s just that I don’t even want to write anymore. It’s frustrating. I so wanted to write some football RPS, but I have no clear ideas so far (no, I’m not going to write the WWII AU). The world obviously needs more Lightman/Loker, but, again, I don’t quite know where to start. And I can’t bring myself just to start writing, like I usually do, because that will only end in more frustration and I’ll give up again. Ah, well, I have only eight episodes of Lie To Me left to watch - maybe they will inspire me, and even if not I will have to find some new occupation after that. ;)

Oh, yes, and I agree with everyone on my f-list, Inception is amazing. Cobb/Arthur FTW, and not only because Arthur looks like Heath Ledger. WTF, that confused me almost more than the admittedly confusing plot. I’ve watched the movie twice so far, and it’s almost more enjoyable the second time because you understand more of what’s going on. The visuals are great, so are the actors. The only thing that bothered me? Marion Cotillard’s accent. I can’t listen to that woman for two sentence without wincing. She has a way of saying “here” that grates on my nerves. I know, it’s a ridiculous thing to notice.

True Blood - Just curious: have you read the original books? Not really going to comment on it any more than that at the moment.

Lie to Me - So, because I'm too lazy to google :), what's it about? Because the characters sound vaguely interesting.

Sherlock - Oh, Sherlock. I;m havign a hard time finding the second episode, which is driving me mad (sherlockbbc, why have you failed me?). I totally meant to do a post of this, but like that's ever going to happen. I kind of loved it, and yet I didn't completely. Well, nothing's perfect!

fanfic - poke poke. WRITE! Consider yourself poked hard for Hans/Mark. Or, you know, any of the Mark films I've recently been watching, because they need more fic as of last week.

Inception - OMG YES everyone loves this movie! I have to see it a third time, because I think I wasn't able to really function the second time I saw it, on account of, oh yeah, no sleep. Yes, yes, yes to Arthur/Cobb! I mean, I love Arthur/Eames along with the rest of the world, but Arthur/Cobb has so much potential! And I agree with the accent - I didn't get it. Every time she opened her mouth it yanked me right out of the film. I didn't dislike the accent itself, just saw no reason for it.

Picspam - Ok, I don't follow any sports, and I have NO idea who any of these boys are, but Arne Friedrich is awfully cute (and reminds me of Hans). And that last pic...adorable. And maybe that's practically fic right there, but I still need something for that pic. And I don't even know what's going on. Damn.

True Blood: No, I haven't read the books. I had a look at them, but I really didn't like the style, and I don't have enough time to read books I don't enjoy. ;) So I just watch the show as something independent from any books, especially since they apparently changed quite a few things anyway.

Lie To Me: is awesome. ;) It's about a scientist whose specialty is reading facial expressions, especially so-called microexpressions (really tiny, unconscious expressions we make when we feel a certain emotion). Baiscally this means that he always knows when people are lying. The character has often been compared to House, and superficially that fits, but they're actually pretty different, deep down. It's really well done, definitely worth having a look. :)

Sherlock: you're right, nothing is perfect, unfortunately. I want my cano slash. Why can't you find the second episode? Are you looking for a direct download?

Inception: Arthur/Eames is just a bit of snide remarks. Sure, you could ship it if you like, but I find it a lot less interesting and deep than Arthur/Cobb. But somehow I don't really want to get into the fandom ... I don't even feel like reading fanfic, it's weird. I don't think Cotillard's accent was on purpose, it's just her own, but it's bloody annoying.

Haha, I'm not really a sports fan either, I just like football, at least I like the German national team. Just too many beautiful, well-built, likeable guys who jump on each other whenever they score, who hug for hours when they win, who cry on each other's shoulders when they lose ... How could I resist?
Yeah, Arne Friedrich is gorgeous. He makes me wonder why he became a football player and not a model. Seriously, that guy is too pretty. Like Hans, yes. ;)

True Blood - Ah. It seems (well, from the people I personally know) to be people like one or the other, and then really not care for the other. I'm not a huge fan of the show, in part because of an irrational dislike of the actress who plays Sookie.

Lie to Me sounds AWESOME.

Damn right I still want my canon slash. *facepalm* - that was supposed to be sherlcokbbc comm why have you failed me, only apparently I forgot html. They had a direct download of the first episode, and I expected them to have the second. Which I didn't see there. I have found a youtube link, and I think if I dig around some more I could find it. ...I'm not sure why I haven't.

Inception - how odd, I haven't actually wanted to read/write for this either. I mean, I flailed about, but there's a kinkmeme I haven't even glanced at. See, I'd be perverse and find something other than bantersnark between Arthur and Eames. I'd still prefer to see Arthur/Cobb though.

I rather like the actress, if only because she's Rogue. ;) Still, one thing I love so much about the third season is that it focuses less on Sookie alone and more on the other characters, who are mostly more interesting than her.

Lie to Me IS awesome. Tim Roth is just amazing. And I ship the hell out of him and his gorgeous young employee, whom he treats like shit. If only because I can't help but wonder why he does that. ;)

Don't know, maybe you can just ask around in the comms, somebody must have a download link somewhere, no? Until then, just watch Lie to Me. ;)

Of course, it's always possible to come up with some cool background story that makes Arthur/Eames more interesting, but just from the movie I prefer Arthur/Cobb. If only because I really, really like DiCaprio, and because I can't look at Eames without thinking of Handsome Bob. And that's just hilarious. ;)

... and it helps that he's hugging the guy I ship him with. ;)

Like I said, irrational. I literally went "OH GOD HER" and made small noises for the rest of the pilot. Maybe someday I'll power past it.

I'll find it eventually. But honestly, Mark comes first. OH BUT HOW WOULD I WATCH LIE TO ME?

...I just have this knee jerk reaction to the constant chair tipping that begs for reassurance fic. Strange, I know. MMM Dicaprio ... but I'm giving him Mark! Re: Handsome Bob - man, I saw RocknRolla between my viewings of this, and that was so my thought!

Okay, I understand that. I also have actors, or mostly actresses, whom I just can't stand.

Erm, Lie to Me ... well, I don't know, I get all my stuff with torrents. Not sure if it's also on youtube or if there are direct downloads.

It's not that I dislike the ship, it just does nothing for me. Especially when I think of how close Arthur and Cobb must be. I just have a soft spot for pairings between two men who are incredibly close to each other, emotionally - that's why I love shipping best friends, brothers, mentor/student... I just find this intimacy a lot more interesting than just superficial snark. Okay, that was pretty much of a tautology. I'm not making any sense anymore, am I? Anyway, that being said, I don't mind snide comments at all in my ships. ;)

I spent some time wondering why that guy looked familiar, and then I suddenly realised it was Handsome Bob. And the rest of the movie I expected him to tell someone he's gay. ;) Need to rewatch RocknRolla.

Lie to Me: Don't get me started on this. Tim Roth as a badass character who's awesome in every way AND Loker on the side who is eyecandy and have the whole "Look I'm so honest!"-thing going on and develops to awesome *draws breath* But you're right, more Loker FTW (even though the episode where he's playing guitar for teh children is pretty lovely)... *end rant*

I saw that episode last night, it's so sweet. I really love Brendan Hines' music in general, it's just so relaxing. And he is really mind-breakingly gorgeous. I need more Lightman/Loker in my life.

Lightman/Loker is wonderful. The way Lightman treats Loker ... I just can't believe that he dislikes Loker that much, or else he wouldn't keep him around. So he must be compensating for something, no? Oh, I need an icon for these two.

Daw, I'm sure that won't happen. And there are always people in this fandom willing to discuss ideas with you and help you when you're stuck. :D

I enjoyed it almost more the second time, because things were suddenly so much clearer. The first time was pretty confusing. But still amazing, if only for the visuals.

It seems I have to check Lie to Me, too... I see it's always compared to House, and a complex character with questionable morals and a dark past sounds intriguing! though not sure if I'd like the big fluffy thing but it's always good to see for yourself :)

Still didn't see the 2nd Holmes episode (the audio didn't work so I have to download another version), but currently I've got a lot of other watchable stuff (classic gory movies, for educational purposes :)

In a way Lightman is more human than House - he has a daughter whom he loves, a best friend whom he really cares about (and not in the boyish House/Wilson-way), it is mentioned several times that he had love relationships in the past that were, well, loving (even if screwed up) ... So, yeah, there is a certain fluffy core, even if only because of his love for his daughter. All of that doesn't keep him from being a complete badass. You should definitely check it out. GUNF Tim Roth. ;)

I enjoyed it a lot less than the first one, but it's still worth watching. ;) If you find time in between the gory movies. ;)

True Blood -- definitely my favorite season so far. I do wish Jessica had a bigger storyline, but I couldn't be happier with everyone else.
I don't entirely agree about Eric because well, I think he's beyond even having a sexual orientation. I think he sees something he wants and goes after it -- male, female, whatever. I don't see anything he does as OOC in terms of sex, unless he lost interest in it altogether.

That being said though, COMPLETELY agree on wanting more Godric!

Yes, I wish there was more Jessica, but Russell and Franklin make up for the lack of Jessica.
Thing about show!Eric is ... he often shows a great interest in men, both emotionally and sexually. His interest in women? His relationship with Pam is more one between maker/child and sometimes older brother/younger sister, nothing sexual there. His interest in Sookie is real, but not one bit sexual. Even when he fucks that Russian dancer, he looks downright bored. Whenever the show gives us Eric with a woman, it looks like a forced attempt to prove his hetero-/bisexuality. I've rarely been so convinced of a character being so entirely gay as I am with Eric.

And oh my God, Franklin. Yes! He's definitely been one of my favorite parts of the show this season. So funny!

I'm also really liking Jesus and Lafayette. I hope Jesus can get over his hangups about the drug stuff, because I think that relationship has the potential to be amazing. Lafayette needs to seriously fall in love... he's usually so left out in that capacity.

I actually wouldn't be opposed to seeing him and Eric hook up either. I wouldn't have thought that earlier in the show, but their chemistry together is actually really cute/fun to watch.

I kinda shipped Eric/Lafayette since that scene where Eric let Lafayette drink his blood to heal his leg. I was rather disappointed they didn't develop that further for a long time.

Awww. I am sorry you haven't been hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration! You never know when these things will creep up on you though. I hope it doesn't make writing for the exchange too stressful!

Haha, okay. Actually, rereading my post I realise there weren't really any spoilers. I think. And you should definitely catch up - both Sherlock and True Blood's third season are really great. ^^

The exchange should work fine. A prompt and a deadline usually work well to make me write. And I still hope that some idea for a Lie To Me fic will creep up on me when I finished watching all the existing episodes so far. Or maybe reading more about Cranmer will make me write some more Cranmer/Cromwell. The world needs that. ;)

GREAT picspam, the slashy pics especially--OMFG, Mertesacker and Friedrich, for some reason I find that pic incredibly hot. It's like they're on the verge of a comfort-fuck ("Go away! Leave us alone!" *sniffle, sniffle, weep, weep*) Although the Klose/Podolski/? threesome is pretty hot, too. That's a wonderfully swoony 'gasm face.

Someone on fanfic.net, I believe, wrote some lovely Holmes/Watson slash some time ago, based on the books--the characterizations were delightful and they even got the Victorian English right! Definitely among the better literature-based slash out there. These two characters have had so many TV/cinema personas that really it's so much better to work directly off the original stories.

I have to see Inception since I have the hots for Tom Hardy now. Also I'm enjoying the slash. Zoi No Miko wrote a delightful Saito/Robert daddy kink story that seriously pushes all my buttons (or bottoms, as you might say) ;-D

You are seriously making me want to watch Lie to Me JUST FOR TIM. It was the comparison to House that did it for me. House annoys me only because I hate the whole exotic disease medical premise. Hugh Laurie is very good, but he's no Tim Roth. I think I like Tim in everything.

And of course you know how much we agree on what we want from True Blood!!!

Oh, it wasn't a comfort fuck, they won that match and cuddled for the celebration. ;) Friedrich is generally the biggest cuddler of the entire team. After every match he seemed to walk around and share a long, tender hug with everyone. ^^
Klose/Podolski are ALWAYS hot. If these two are not doing each other, I don't know who is. And Poldi generally looks like a naughty boytoy on most pictures. His "come hither and ravish me"-look is epic.

It probably makes me a bad person, but I'm not a big fan of classic Holmes. I think it was cat_irix who pointed out that the problem with Holmes is that the character and the stories were really modern when they were written, but to us they feel all Victorian and old and slow. Which is why modern-day Holmes is so much fun, because he conveys the same sense of quickness and modernity that Doyle's readers probably felt back when the stories were first published. So, yeah, all that rambling just to say: there are many bad movies about them out there, but this is really worth watching.

Oh, you'll never let me live my pathetic Freudian slips down, will you? ;D It's weird, for some reason I don't even feel like reading Inception slash, no matter how hard I ship some people. Damn, if you like Tom Hardy that much, I can already see that you'll ship something else than I do. ;)

I love House, and I love the exotic diseases, and I love Hugh Laurie in that role. The comparison annoys me a bit, because Lightman and House are actually very different characters, despite the cynicism and roughness they share. Anyway, if you like Tim Roth you should definitely watch Lie To Me. If only for the accent porn. And for him beating up his gorgeous employee only to offer him pineapple icecream afterwards. ^^

You're not a bad person, but I had to laugh when I read what cat_irix said. Of course a woman who works primarily with computer code would think that Victorian-era literature was old and slow. I love the woman to death, but like every other type of engineer, she has a very different view of the world. I don't see it as old and slow, but perhaps that has something to do with having had Victorian-era-born grandparents, or having read too much Victorian literature. Or maybe I'm just showing my age. In any case, I definitely agree with you that there are many, many bad Holmes interpretations out there, and I'm very interested in this new one. I just loved the slash I read because it captured the tone of the original literature so perfectly, but people who don't like that tone probably wouldn't like it. To each his/her own! ;-)

Don't get me wrong. I love Hugh Laurie as house, just not the exotic disease premises. Of course you're right, it's not really fair to compare Lightman and House, they're each very different characters. The one thing that bothers me the most about House is the American accent. Laurie's accent is very good, but he's British. Why not let him have a British accent? Why does he have to be American? What purpose does it serve, if any? Why use a great talent like Hugh Laurie and force him to sound American? Oh, well, he's still very, very good in it, regardless of the accent.

The highlight of my evening was watching a documentary on IFC about sex in indies films with some interesting talking heads. OMFG, Peter Saarsgard talking talking about seeing "The Night Porter" in a special film class after Jesuit high school, finding the erotic necrophilia scenes in "Kissed" hot, and having his ass played with in "Center of The World". HE'S SUCH A FLIRT. GUUUUUUUHHHHHNNNNFFFFFF!!!!!

Maybe saying that it's old and slow was a bit harsh, and not really what I meant. Let me rephrase: in any story set in a time other than our own, at least part of our attention is focused on the pretty period costumes, omfg-Victorian-London, funny gadgets that we don't have anymore etc. So even if the story itself is thrilling and modern, we still feel that the setting is just so old-fashioned and not very modern - a feeling that Doyle's readers obviously didn't have. That's all I meant.
Anyway. I have to admit that I'm generally not a big fan of detective stories of any sort. It's just not my thing, so naturally I'm not much of a Holmes fan. It takes a lot to get me interested into stuff like that. ;)

I don't mind Laurie's American accent. I think it would have been a lot weirder to have an English doctor running around there, because inevitably there would have been jokes about his accent and his origins, people would have attributed House's crankiness to the general English crankiness, stuff like that. Pretty much what happened with Chase because he's Australian. I think they wouldn't want House to be English because they don't want people to focus on where he's from, and if you have an English actor/character in an American show, in an American setting, both the other characters and the audience will focus on where he's from. *shrug*

It's true, in film we're often distracted by pretty period costumes. But in literature it's more a matter of the different writing style of the period, which I don't find distracting because I've read so damn much that the only time the language distracts me is when it's either really bad or I'm having to translate it into English. Or when plot points are so obviously lifted from other works. The fact that the love triangle in Water for Elephants (which isn't a very good novel to begin with) is lifted from Styron's Sophie's Choice (crazed Jew + lapsed Catholic + naive bumpkin) really ruined it altogether. Which is why I have to write a novel. If a book that bad can make money, I'm sure I can, too, especially when it's so much easier and more lucrative now with on-line publishing.

I don't mind Hugh Laurie's accent, either, because it really is good. If it weren't, I would mind it a great deal. You make an excellent point, that had he kept his British accent his crankiness might very well have been attributed to his origins rather than to any peculiar quirks within the man himself (who is so, so quirk-filled that he makes the series worth watching). Under those circumstances, his British accent would have very much been a distraction from his characterization.

Sure, it's less distracting in a novel, but in movies you really do pay attention to it. I saw the third part of Sherlock today, and I love their Sherlock and his interaction with Watson so much. So much delicious UST and Sherlock's awkward way of showing he cares, it's sweet. ^^ You should definitely watch it. Speaking of stuff to watch - True Blood this week? Was it epic or was it epic? :)

I've heard some (very few) Americans say that they thought his accent sounded artificial, and that really weirded me out, because it does sound very natural to me. I guess some people are just bitchy on principle just because they heard that he's English.

OMFG True Blood this week!!!! They sure came back from last week's episode with a vengeance, didn't they? We even had a brief taste of the eventual return of Franklin (albeit in a dream). The only thing I was sorry about was Bill & Sookie reuniting, because she and the werewolf really do make a good couple, and they had some nice scenes together this episode. Although I did enjoy Bill & Sookie's make-up sex.

But Eric & Talbot??? GUUUUUHHHHNNNFFFF! See, I told you Talbot would throw a how-dare-that-bitch-move-in-on-my-territory hissy fit and he did. And it's a good thing, too, since Russell left him Eric to keep him "entertained." ;-) Still, it would have been nice to see Eric fuck Talbot for a while before he killed him. But still, I am pleased. I'm sure the gifs will show up on LJ eventually.

This had to be the slashiest episode so far. I was so happy to see Jesus return and to see those two boys kiss without the camera pulling back!! And I swear to god, Sam & Tommy seem to be getting closer every week to a comfort fuck. I actually didn't mind Jason's stupid romance this week because there was so much slash. Now if they can just keep up the momentum...

I was a bit irritated by Talbot's comment about Franklin's brain on the linen. I know they didn't comment more on it because they don't want to admit he's coming back, but still.
Haha, yes, that episode really made me ship Sookie/Alcide - and, weirdly enough, Bill/Jessica, and I never thought I'd say that. But since I generally really like Bill/Sookie, I don't mind. Bill/Sookie means no Eric/Sookie.

GUNF indeed. Please tell me it wasn't just my sick fantasy that made me imagine that Talbot said "yes, daddy"? It sounded like it, but I wasn't sure ... it would be too perfect to be true.
I'm really sad Eric killed Talbot, I wish he would have been around for longer. :( I really wonder how Eric will survive this. Let's just hope they won't use "the authority" as a deus ex machina to save Eric's sorry arse.

Jesus and Lafayette are just too sweet. ^^ And it feels like the show WANTS us to ship Sam/Tommy. To distract from Sam/Bill or what? ;D

Tara managed to be even MORE annoying this episode. I was amazed.
