But let's face it, most of the important NS officers, party functionaries etc. were fairly pathetic guys. Even Heydrich, much as I admire him for other things, was fairly pathetic in other regards.

I couldn't agree with you more. For supposedly pure Aryans, they were all incredibly flawed human beings. What I found most interesting in Schellenberg's memoirs was his description of Himmler as a pathetic, toadying little dweeb. As much as I find it hard to believe that anyone would follow someone as unappealing as Hitler, I find it even harder to believe that Himmler, the chinless chicken farmer, led the SS and was actually Heydrich's superior. Yegads.

Yep. It's harder to be more pathetic than Hitler, but Himmler manages. I can understand why Heydrich was so incredibly frustrated with that nutcase.
